Before You Arrive: Logistics Worth Understanding
The Rota das Emoções runs between two anchor airports — São Luís International Airport (SLZ) in Maranhão to the west, and Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) in Fortaleza, Ceará, to the east. The standard approach for a 7-day itinerary is to fly into São Luís and out of Fortaleza — or the reverse — moving through the route in one direction rather than doubling back.
São Luís receives direct international flights from Lisbon and connections from Miami, Panama City and major European hubs via São Paulo. Fortaleza receives direct flights from Lisbon, Milan and several other European cities, as well as connections from North America. Day 1 — Arrival in São Luís and Transfer to Barreirinhas
Morning and Afternoon
Arrive at São Luís International Airport. A private LDJ Travel vehicle and driver are waiting at the arrivals hall — no searching for a transfer desk, no shared minibus, no waiting. The vehicle is air-conditioned, the driver speaks sufficient English for the essentials, and the journey to Barreirinhas begins immediately.
The road from São Luís to Barreirinhas covers approximately 280 kilometres through the Maranhão interior — a journey of 4 to 5 hours that passes through flat landscapes of babaçu palms, small towns and the wide northeastern sky. It is not a journey to be rushed or resented. Bring a book, watch the landscape change, and allow the transition from wherever you have traveled from to begin in earnest.
Evening
Arrival in Barreirinhas in the late afternoon, in time to settle into your pousada before the light changes over the Rio Preguiças. The riverfront at dusk — when the day's heat relents and the water turns copper in the last of the sun — is one of the finest arrivals on the route.
Dinner at Chalé do Rio on the riverfront: unhurried, well-prepared, with river views and a wine list that justifies the choice. This is not the evening for an early night — the Preguiças at 9 PM, with the sound of the river and the warm air and the particular quality of quiet that only small Brazilian towns produce at this hour, is worth staying awake for.

Day 2 — Dawn Dunes and the Lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses
Pre-Dawn
This is the morning that justifies the journey.
Departure at 5:00 AM — before sunrise, before any other tour group has assembled, before the light has committed to a color. A private 4x4 with an expert guide carries you to the dune ridge above the main lagoon cluster. You arrive in darkness, or close to it. You climb the last ridge on foot.

Day 3 — River Journey to Atins
Morning
Breakfast at the pousada, packed and ready by 8:00 AM. A private boat departs from the Barreirinhas landing for the three-hour journey downstream to Atins — one of the finest slow journeys on the entire route.
The Preguiças moves at its own pace and the boat matches it. Stops at Vassouras for those who did not visit the previous afternoon, and at Mandacaru — the village at the river mouth — where a 19th-century lighthouse offers panoramic views of the Atlantic, the delta and the first ridges of the dunes. Lunch at Caburé: grilled fish at a table between the river and the sea, both bodies of water visible simultaneously, cold beer and the Atlantic breeze.
Afternoon
Arrival in Atins in the early afternoon. The village receives you quietly — sandy streets, the sound of the river, the particular light that arrives from the east across the dunes. Check into your pousada, which is small and personal in a way that the Barreirinhas properties, however good, cannot quite replicate.
Late afternoon: walk to the dune edge south of the village — fifteen minutes on foot — and climb the first ridge. The eastern lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses spread westward from here, emptier and more remote than anything accessible from Barreirinhas. Spend an hour on the ridge as the light changes. Return to the village for dinner at Restaurante do Rio: river fish, pirão, the sound of the water.

Day 4 — Atins and the Eastern Lagoons
Pre-Dawn
A second dawn excursion — this time from Atins, which provides access to the eastern lagoon corridor that the Barreirinhas tours do not reach. The guide knows which lagoon holds the most water this week and which ridge produces the finest sunrise view from this side of the park. Departure at 5:00 AM, return by 10:00 AM.
Morning and Afternoon
The morning after the excursion belongs entirely to Atins. Breakfast in the pousada garden. A walk to the Atlantic beach north of the village — empty, wind-swept, with the kind of surf that demands respect rather than entry. A long lunch. A hammock.
This unstructured time is not a gap in the itinerary. It is part of the itinerary. Atins is a village that rewards the traveler who allows it to set the pace, and the afternoon of Day 4 — with the dunes already experienced twice at their finest, the river journey behind you and the delta ahead — is the correct moment to practice the particular discipline of doing very little in an extraordinary place.

Day 5 — Parnaíba and the Delta do Parnaíba
Pre-Dawn
A private boat departs from the Parnaíba riverfront at first light for the Delta do Parnaíba — the only open-sea delta in the Americas, a labyrinthine world of 2,700 islands, carnaúba palms, roseate spoonbills and Antillean manatees that most international travelers have never heard of and that constitutes, for many who make the journey, the most unexpected and enduring memory of the entire route.
Morning
The first hours on the delta are the finest. The light is horizontal and gold. The birds are active — spoonbills on the sandbanks, frigate birds overhead, herons motionless at the water's edge. Day 6 — Transfer to Jericoacoara
Morning
The journey from Parnaíba to Jericoacoara covers approximately 400 kilometres along the Piauí and Ceará coastal road — a 5 to 6-hour private transfer that passes through some of the most varied coastal landscapes on the route: fishing villages, mangrove-lined estuaries, vast stretches of dune and the occasional lagoon visible from the road.
This is not a transit to be endured. The northeast Brazilian coast between Piauí and Ceará is beautiful in the uncurated way that roads through undeveloped coastline are always beautiful — uneven, surprising, intermittently extraordinary.

The first evening in Jericoacoara has a specific agenda: the sunset at Pedra Furada.
The natural stone arch at the western end of the village beach has been the site of the nightly sunset ritual for as long as anyone has been coming here. The great dune above the village, climbed on foot in twenty minutes, offers the finest elevated view. The sun drops into the Atlantic at a speed that surprises most first-time witnesses. The final morning on the Rota das Emoções should not be spent packing.
Departure from the pousada at 6:00 AM for a private sunrise climb of the great dune above the village — the view from the summit at first light, with the Atlantic stretching west and the chain of lagoons catching the early sun to the east, is different from the sunset view and equally worth the effort.
Breakfast back in the village at one of the small cafés on the main sandy street: tapioca, fresh fruit, strong coffee.
Late morning: Lagoa do Paraíso — the freshwater lagoon 10 kilometres east of the village, fringed with cashew trees and wooden platforms over the water. A final swim in water so calm and clear that the surface acts as a mirror. The guide who has accompanied you through the dunes and the delta sits on the platform edge and talks about what he has seen change in this landscape over twenty years of working it. This conversation, unhurried and specific, is worth more than any guidebook.
Afternoon
Private transfer to Fortaleza airport — approximately 4 to 5 hours, departing at a time calibrated to your flight. The driver knows the road. The vehicle is comfortable. The journey gives you time to reconstruct the week before it becomes memory.

What is the best time of year for this 7-day itinerary? July through September is the optimal window — the Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons are at peak volume, the delta is navigable in all its channels, and Jericoacoara's wind is at its finest for kitesurfers. October and November are excellent as well, with slightly reduced lagoon levels but consistently beautiful conditions across all three destinations. For travel in the July-to-September peak season, a minimum of three to four months in advance is advisable to secure preferred accommodation in Atins and Jericoacoara, where the best properties have limited rooms and fill early.
