The Full Itinerary

🥾 About the trekking section (Days 2–4)

The first three days are a genuine wilderness crossing. Not a guided walk on a marked trail — a multi-day traverse of the dune interior, staying in hammocks (redes) in the homes of local families in communities that can only be reached on foot. What to expect:

  • Day 2: ~6km walk through dunes (~3h30). Overnight in Baixa Grande oasis in hammocks.
  • Day 3: ~9km walk through the park's best lagoons (~5h). Overnight in Queimada dos Britos in hammocks.
  • Day 4: ~12km walk to Betânia (~7h). Early 4am departure. Transfer back to Barreirinhas.
  • Snack kit provided each morning. Meals at local homes (regional food, not included in package price).
  • Moderate fitness required. No technical climbing — but sustained walking on sand is physically demanding.

Into the dunes — first oasis

Private speedboat down the Preguiças River to Atins.

4x4 from Atins to the mouth of Rio Negro (20km along the coast), then on foot into the dunes. The first stage of the crossing. Arrival at Baixa Grande — a genuine oasis inside the national park, accessible only on foot. Accommodation, lunch and dinner prepared by local residents (regional chicken or goat, not included in price). Sunset from a nearby dune. Sleep in hammocks at the local home.

Best lagoons of the park — the famous film location

Trek: Baixa Grande → Queimada dos Britos 🥾 Trek Day 2 ~9km · ~5h

Departure at 6am (or agreed with guide). The longest walking day crosses the park's most spectacular lagoon fields — stops to swim and rest throughout. Arrival at Queimada dos Britos: a remote village that has been the setting for the film "Casa de Areia" and numerous national and international documentary productions. Lunch and dinner (not included) prepared by local hosts. Hammock overnight.

Final stage — longest day, earliest start

Trek: Queimada dos Britos → Betânia 🥾 Trek Day 3 ~12km · ~7h

Departure at 4am (or agreed with guide) to avoid the midday heat. The final and longest stage of the crossing. Arrival in Betânia village at approximately 11am. Snack kit provided. Transfer from Betânia to Barreirinhas by vehicle. Hotel check-in, rest, and a well-earned dinner in town.

Physical Requirements

The trekking section involves walking on sand for up to 7 hours per day in tropical conditions. Good physical fitness is required. If you have any health concerns, please discuss with us before booking. Trekking may be cancelled or adapted due to extreme weather.

Luggage

23 kg per person total. During the trek, you carry a daypack only — main luggage is transported separately and reunited with you in Barreirinhas. We recommend packing a light daypack (max 10kg) for the trek days.

Important Note — Different Airports

This itinerary begins in São Luís and ends in Fortaleza. You will need to book flights accordingly — in via São Luís (IATA: SLZ), out via Fortaleza (IATA: FOR).

These two oasis communities inside the park offer accommodation in traditional hammocks in the homes of local residents. The experience is basic and authentic — this is not a hostel or guesthouse, but a window into the lives of the people who have lived in the park for generations.
