The Lençóis Maranhenses are not fixed scenery. The lagoons fill between January and June and begin to dry from July onward; a week of rain can open a route that was dry the week before, or close one that was open. Barreirinhas, the main gateway to the Lençóis, has grown fast in recent years. It now has the best infrastructure of any base in the region — but that popularity means good pousadas fill up early. Knowing which ones to trust, and which to avoid, is part of what I personally sort out before you ever set foot in Brazil.

Few visitors realize the national park itself holds more than 20,000 lagoons, and that a handful are perennial — full year-round, not only in the rainy months. Knowing which ones is a matter of local experience, not something any map can show you.

English-Speaking, Every Step

You should never have to negotiate logistics in a language you don't speak, or wonder whether something was lost in translation on a booking that matters. Here's something most travel guides won't tell you: genuinely bilingual local guides are rare in this region. The people who know the Lençóis, the Delta and Jericoacoara best are often former fishermen and lifelong locals — deeply skilled and entirely trustworthy, but rarely fluent in English. Importing a bilingual guide sounds like the fix, but in our experience, very few know the region with the depth of someone who has lived here their whole life — the trade-off rarely pays off. What actually works is simpler: a WhatsApp line, in English, available throughout your trip, translating and coordinating in real time between you and the local team on the ground.

What Independent Travelers Often Miss

Some of the most common planning mistakes come from small details that rarely make it into a guidebook.

• The Delta boat tour: the departure point isn't in Parnaíba itself, as most visitors assume, but at a separate port about 15 minutes away. Travelers who don't know this in advance risk missing the boat entirely.
• Timing Delta and Jericoacoara: both are excellent choices between October and December — exactly the months when the Lençóis lagoons are drying out. Sequencing a trip around this cycle, rather than against it, makes a real difference.
• Jericoacoara's private beaches: several of the region's most photographed spots sit on private land, with entrance fees charged separately at each gate — a detail that surprises travelers who assumed everything was included.
• A second airport option: beyond the traditional Fortaleza airport, Jericoacoara has its own (JJD), just under an hour from the village — useful for travelers extending their trip elsewhere in Brazil.
• Piauí's coastline is short but concentrated: Barra Grande sits about 60km from Parnaíba, while Luís Correia, only 15km away, has beautiful beaches of its own, with quad-bike and banana-boat excursions.
• Santo Amaro: a village most visitors have never heard of, just 15 minutes by 4x4 from the national park entrance — one of several access points we choose between depending on conditions.

Practical Peace of Mind

• Entry requirements: Brazil does not require a visa or a yellow fever vaccine to visit the Rota das Emoções.
• Health & insurance: we strongly recommend travel insurance for every trip. Brazil's public health system does offer free care for minor issues — a stomach bug, for instance — but we still ask every client to confirm their insurance before departure, simply as a precaution.
• Cash and cards: carrying cash isn't mandatory, but we recommend keeping a small safety amount on hand. Most places accept card payments, though signal strength can be unreliable in a few more remote spots.
